The Resilient Futures Campaign aims to develop a resilient Australian society and reduce the impact of disasters in the future. We believe focusing on child-centred disaster resilience education (CC-DRE) is critical to the building of a culture of resilience.
Therefore, our overarching campaign goal is to enable a more resilient future for Australians by:
-
Prompting the introduction of CC-DRE into school education; and
-
Increasing the awareness of the need to include CC-DRE in emergency management programs and strategies.
Incorporating CC-DRE into school education and emergency management programs and strategies is a multifaceted long-term goal. To achieve these goals, our campaign has identified short, medium, and long term objectives:
Short-term objectives:
-
Increase awareness of CC-DRE
-
Community building around CC-DRE
-
Generate signatures for our petition to the Australian Education Minister calling for CC-DRE
Medium-term objectives:
-
Introduce CC-DRE into schools through our Kids Drawing Competition
-
Encourage children to talk with their parents about disaster resilience and emergency planning
-
Deliver our petition to the Federal Education Minister to further our advocacy with the formal and accessible institutions of government
Long-term objectives:
-
Develop educational activities that help students, families, and schools improve disaster resilience and save money for individuals and communities
-
Teach children about disaster resilience in order to create resiliency advocates for life!
Ultimately, we want to change the curriculum to include CC-DRE, which involves more than just a subject change but a rethinking of how disaster resilience can be fostered and taught in schools. We also want emergency management agencies to pivot their focus towards resilience - so a focus on preparedness rather than recovery - and to include CC-DRE in their engagement with schools and the community.
